All 'Appenin Up North!

Yorkshire seems to be the epicentre of TV series and blockbuster films at the moment. With the magnificent success of The Kings Speech, some of which was filmed in the fine city of Leeds, of which we attended the fantastic premier at Leeds Town Hall, thanks to Leeds Film Festival; and the upcoming series of Eternal Law and DCI Banks it looks like Yorkshire is on a role!

Eternal Law is a legal drama, based in the Medieval city of York, brought to us by Kudos Films. It is about two lawyers who are actually angels and their lives in a big law firm in the city of York. Filming starts in February 2011.

DCI Banks, police drama will also be returning to our screens, thanks to Left Bank Pictures all set in Leeds, in particular near the River Aire. Filming starts in March 2011.

A big welcome and thanks to the great voices we have had recording voice overs recently with Spen, for the likes of DFS Sofas and TMD. We have had our good friend John Thompson (Cold Feet, Coronation Street) who is the the voice over for DFS, James Thornton (Emmerdale's John Barton) who regularly pops in to do voice overs for numerous clients.
We also welcomed some new voice artists, including, Jo Hartly (This Is England actress) and Jenna Louise Coleman (Ex Emmerdale actress) and Jo Mitchell who popped in for some voice over recording just the other day!

The Guardian has stated 2011 as the year that advertising budgets resume the form they took before the recession.
2010 was the year that advertising spend was recovering but still not back to how it was, but it seems 2011 holds much hope.
With Internet advertising becoming progressively popular, this may see an effect on TV and Radio. However recent reports see Radio as being a trustworthy, old friend that works in advertising anything from supermarkets to holidays!

3D TV's For All

Britain set for 100,000 3D TVs sold in a year

A total of 85,000 3D TVs have been sold in Great Britain so far, according to market research firm GFK

Nigel Catlow, business group director consumer electronics at GFK said he expected opinion to be divided on the latest figures.

“3D is on course for 100,000 units to be sold within a year, which for a new format is not such a bad start,” he told Broadcast. “I remember when 16:9 launched and there was not much content, the hardware was expensive and it took three years to get to 30,000 pieces.”

November proved to be a bumper month for 3D TV manufacturers, with 31,000 3D sets sold, up on the 25,000 sold in October and a marked increase on the 9,000 that were sold in September.

In March, Currys claimed to be the first retailer to offer a 3D TV, a 52” Sony for £2999. Some retailers are now offering sets below £1000, a significant price point which should boost sales, Catlow said.

“Whether people truly believe in 3D or not, some of these TVs are a good choice for 2D viewing and lots of people will want a ‘future proof’ set,” he said.

Catlow was reluctant predict how many sets would be sold in the usually buoyant months of December and January, but he said that it would be above a combined total of 60,000.

“The weather will be a key factor – if there is a huge dollop of snow that will restrict people and it will have an impact,” he added.

One step closer to UAE

The last few months have been busy on the UAE front. VTR are set up to work with UAE Companies, from Agencies to Production Companies out in United Arab Emirates.

We have drummed down the possible work areas to: Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar. Our friends at Pinsent Masons have been fantastic in preparing us for working with the Middle East. We are preparing our OMIS (Overseas Market Introductory Service) whereby UKTI's consulates based over in the Middle East can help us with introductions, market information etc.

We will be offering to the Middle East a lot of what we do over in the UK, including Off-line editing, Online editing, Colour grading, Finishing, Visual Effects, Motion graphics, CGI, Camera tracking, Animation, Sound design, Track laying, Audio production and encoding. In particular Reversioning, will be a particular service of interest to the Saudi's. We have been involved in a lot of reversioning -with the likes of Spanish agency Athletico for SEAT. Bauer Media stated this week "Don't underestimate radios power as an advertising medium". Although Radio is not seen as quite so modern an outlet as TV, it still has a hugely persuasive power as an advertising tool. Heavy radio advertisers like Coca Cola and Red Bull will agree.

Radio is also a growing media thanks to the arrival of digital platforms, which are being used massively by the likes of Radio 1 etc.

With 84, 500,000 radios in Britain's homes I'd say Radio is still loved.

Seven Days too long?

Factual Producer Steve Lambert thought that bringing in an interactive show such as Seven Days on to Channel 4 could be nothing but a success.
It seems he was wrong. Yes, Channel 4 have commented they liked the theme so will not turn down another request to do a similar thing, however were not happy with the drooping viewing stats.
Personally I watched one episode and found it to be quite refreshing, especially since the characters involved were quite interesting, however was it just too close to George Orwells Nineteen Eighty Four or Big Brother? What do you think?

VTR have been working with Screen Yokshire quietly over the last few weeks to create a nice 3D sting/ ident, which was succesfully received at the 3D In Your Face two day event at Bradford Media Museum on Friday 22nd October. Robin at Screen Yorkshire, worked very closely with Greg Baldwin (Producer) and Chris Brearley (VFX Artist) to create a 3D Ident to play between presentations. Chris Brearley had the job of transforming a piece of graphic to sterographic format, he also did after effects and animation on the stinger which can now be seen below.

The Radio Academy Hall of Fame Awards sponsored by PRS for Music was held last night at The Monastery, Manchester. VTR North headed down and enjoyed a great evening, the night included a champagne reception, a 3 course meal and an award ceremony. The legendary Tim Westwood picked up an Award, as did Bob Harris. VTR North are pleased to announounce our involvement with Uber Creative Agency in creating a groundbreaking, first ever advert for Kazakhstan!

The commercial is about the fact that the UN have honoured Kazakhstan by making August 29th 'International Day Against Nuclear Testing', highlighting that Kazakhstan is a global leader in nuclear responsibility. Uber shot the ad in Kazakhstans capital Astana using Ink Films.

The ad is to be aired in intervals in Times Square for the month.

It has been a very busy last few weeks for the operators and producers at VTR.

With bookings for suites starting at 8.30 am through till 5.30 pm, we have had to pull a few "all nighters" in order to get the bulk of work finished for the tightest deadlines, sometimes working through till 1am. From editing of DFS ads to the building of 3d cars, the VTR North suites are in full use right now right around the clock! With a great production team and operators on board however all work is being completed at an excellent standard, bang on time!

There are signs that the recovery in the TV advertising market may continue into the final months of 2010, with 8% year-on-year revenue growth predicted for October. While the market has shown solid double-digit growth for most of 2010, fuelled in part by increased spending around the World Cup, the industry has quietly feared that the recovery might run out of steam in last three months of the year. The last quarter is a critical bellwether of the state of the market because these months were the strongest in 2009, meaning the impact of very weak year-on-year growth comparatives is in effect stripped out, giving a true gauge of advertiser confidence.

Meet Middle East

Even if Dubai is a bit on hold at the moment, the Middle East offers a lot in terms of it being the perfect situ to export to.

In comes us, a Post Production house smack bang in Leeds city centre. Where is the correlation you may be asking my friends? Well. We have recently received enquiries from Syria for grading work and felt it might be worth tapping in to what looks to be a growing market.

So we got in touch with UKTI (UK Trade and Investments) a government-led organisation who help support UK companies export to foreign lands.

It's still early days but as soon as we have anymore news on this exciting new venture we will keep our fondest followers posted!

Total listening hours were 253 million hours per week, up 17% in the second quarter."

VTR Digital set your world in motion has just been born at our Leeds studios. A new entity in itself, VTR Digital offers motion graphics, animation, content creation, stereography, 3d, visual effects, branding and design.

It all started just a month ago when we had a visit from a Global Digital Display, Immersive Visualisation and Virtual Reality specialist. Off the back of that meeting, we have been able to showcase our work at The BT Liverpool Arena these last few days, a great thing for us.

From this, we are in talks with providing 3d and motion graphics services for Creative Agencies and Audio Visual Conferencing companies who are embracing the growing industry that is STEREOGRAPHY.

The Venkman Heist Debut Music Video

2 weeks was all it took for our Visual Effects Artist, Chris Brearley to create the concept, make, direct and edit the debut music video for The Venkman Heist.
The music video was made for the Independent Sheffield Film Festival competition, which gave him the challenge just days before beginning this project and true to form VTR Norths member of staff achieved this. With help from Chris Birks for editing and Carl Walters for colouring the final video.

A sudden influx of Yorkshire work flow has hit the edit suites at VTR North over the last week.

Countdown's Conundrum- one of our favourite jobs has been on the agenda for the last few days in our largest Smoke suite.

Yorkshire Girl Guiding, this took 2-3 days worth of Final Cut to create a nice little short film, courtesy of Screen Yorkshire.

York Museum and York Maze are two commercials we have the pleasure of working on in our Smoke studio.

We love doing what we do, especially when we can provide a post production service to fellow Yorkshire folk!

Carling pulled together a specially-created ad ahead of England's World Cup clash with the USA on Saturday - thanks to the speedy production skills of VTR North. The Leeds post-production house spent Saturday handling the editing, grading, sound design and mixing of Carling's spot, which was shot just a day before in Yorkshire, so the ad could go out ahead of England's game that evening.

The ad, created by Beattie McGuinness Bungay and Big Balls Productions, showed the gang of 'mates' from carling's recent ad campaign take to their camels to deliver home draught crates to competition winners in Yorkshire.

But the winners were only announced on Friday, and their beer was delivered that day, prompting VTR North to go into extra time to get the ad ready for Saturday evening ahead of kick off in Rustenburg. Because of the speed of the edit ClearCast had to be present in the studio to approve the ad is it was being cut.

It went out on time on ITV1 before the match and you can see the outcome here.

Carling & Camels at VTR North

Saturday 12th June 2010, saw VTR North undertake the task of editing, grading, sound design and mix, for Carling's pre England World Cup match commercial on ITV that very evening.

The cast of thousands descended on Leeds' premier post production facility to prepare to deliver 100 Carling Home Draught Crates to the lucky winners of the competition announced on Friday 11th June.

Beattie McGuinness Bungay and Big Balls Productions knew who their mates were and called VTR North with their brief for this World Cup project.

They brought to Leeds, along with the Carling "Mates" in full Eastern attire; Clearcast who were in our edit suites to approve the commercial as it was being cut and two camels to deliver the beer to Yorkshire's lucky winners!

It's a Toy Story for VTR North

Over the last few weeks we have really enjoyed using our brand new Smokes for toy commercials; including the Bakugan New Vestroia range. This involved editing and cutting footage from the Canadian pre made advert, deleting the legal captions and changing typeface for the new ones and adding new end frames. After Effects were also called in for sharpening up images and pulling the colours out, as well as creating a flickering light effect across the screen, to create and build atmosphere.Tagging (adding logos) was also done for this ad and laying audio over the top.

We have also just finished some work on the Spongi ads, which needed adapting, so a large amount of editing to get the commercial from a 30 to a 20 sec one. Grading and colour correcting, tagging, editing and then laying audio over the top of the commercial.

See these ads on Channel 4 early morning TV! All in all a great couple of weeks work, bring on the next toy story ...

We reversioned Shakira

We were involved in the reversioning of it, this involved changing the ad from the Spanish format to the UK standard, including changing the small print size etc.. It took just a day, but we could have listened to Shakira's voice all week!

VTRNorth pleased to announce Olivia Scott as their New Business Manager.

VTR North appointed Miss Scott to head up the marketing side of their business. Her strong background in marketing and sales will stand VTR North in good stead for further development.

Miss Scott commented: "I am extremely happy to be here to encourage growth of the existing customer base and to connect with new clients. VTR North have a very bright future, and I am thrilled to be able to contribute to that."
This year VTR North are celebrating their five-year anniversary. The business offers a collaborative approach to digital editing after effects, 3D animation, motion graphics, radio commercial production and sound design including voiceovers, music videos and commercial editing.

Their work includes; award winning short films, Roses award winning Radio work, music videos for the likes of James Morrison and commercials for DFS and Channel 4.

Smokey Business

Breaking News..! Well, kind of.

VTR North have invested in two of Autodesk’s latest Smoke Advanced Systems; this compliments are existing HD and Stereoscopic workflow.

The order was placed at NAB in Las Vegas in April this year and is expected to be fully commissioned by the middle of May. The purchase was made due to the increased demand for HD and 3D Stereoscopic projects. “XTFX are proud of our association with VTR North over the past five year. The acquisition of TWO Smoke Advanced Systems will be a great addition to their facility and we are sure will be a major contribution to their continued success in the future.” Jim Totman.

Staff at VTR North are pleased to hear there will not only be a Sex and The City 2 film out 27th May 2010, but also a Toy Story 3 out this summer and to top it off this winter Little Fockers ( a sequel to Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers) will be out December 2010! We cannot wait.

Leeds could become one of UK’s most advanced business hubs thanks to the installation of a high-speed fibre network.
Local telecommunications firm AQL plans to roll out Internet connectivity with speeds of up to 100 megabits per second, at least ten times faster than the national average.
The service is currently exclusive to The Calls area (pictured), home to some of the city’s media and marketing agencies - including post house VTR North - and regional film agency Screen Yorkshire.
VTR North was a guinea pig in a trial that saw a fibre network with gigabit capacity run directly into its building from a major hub only a few hundred metres away.
VTR managing director Carl Waters said: 'We can now upload 40 commercials in an hour to our London based partners as opposed to 45 minutes per commercial. Unlike some of the regional initiatives which have been set up to achieve this, our connection is delivered to our desktop and allows us to access every media company in the country.'
AQL operates several ‘exchange’ sites around the UK, including a fibre network between Leeds and London.
The company has installed local fibre from its Leeds sites into strategic points, such as multi tenanted offices, which allows Leeds based businesses to access data and internet services.
AQL is planning to expand its network throughout other areas of Leeds city centre thorough 2010.
Adam Beaumont, the managing director of AQL, said: 'This model allows many businesses to get a head start on their competitors, reaping the advantages of high-speed-working long before the delivery of the Digital Britain promise.'"
